May 31 Parent Message

Happy Friday Bayside Parents!

I can’t believe it is the last day of May. Although the end of the school year is within sight, our focus on our students and their success remains as strong as ever. There is still a lot of learning to do! Our staff and students will be doing important work through the month of June to help our students transition successfully to the next grade, the next classroom, or the next school.

Updates and Reminders:

SHAPE Alberta Wheel Week and ABCDay (Anything But a Car Day): SHAPE Alberta’s Wheel Week is a week focused on safe and active transportation. Students are encouraged to get active by walking or using bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, etc. to travel to and from school, and around their communities all week.

Students are to wear helmets, and any other safety gear needed. Students should also bring locks to secure their rides. You may lock up your bike along the fence that goes around the parking lot if the bike racks are full. No bike should be left unlocked.

Please remember to get off your bike or scooter and walk it while on school grounds. If you wear rollerblades, make sure you have another pair of shoes to change into as soon as you arrive at school, before entering the school.

On Thursday June 6th, we will be having an Anything But a Car Day (ABCDay) where we hope everyone can travel to school in an active way. There will be a special park your bike/scooter/skateboard in the gymnasium on Thursday to make sure there is space for everyone.

There will also be a daily prize draw each day of the week for a student who took part in arriving by active transportation! Let’s get rolling!!

Street Sweeping: The City of Calgary will be doing street sweeping near our school on Tuesday June 4th. Parents who might be volunteering or visiting the school that day my wish to walk to the school (or ride a bikeJ) as we have limited parking in our parking lot.

Sunscreen: We are so happy our families are being sun smart! We do have a request… please do not send aerosol or spray-type sunscreens to school. If you would like your child to reapply sunscreen during the day, we request that you send them with a small bottle of lotion-type sunscreen that they can apply independently. Spray sunscreens can damage the surfaces in our school and it is too challenging for staff to monitor and supervise sunscreen application (especially with the spray bottles) outside while also supervising our students’ play. A hat and a light, long sleeve shirt are also great for sun protection. Thanks again!

Shoes: With the warm weather, some of our students are coming to school in flip-flops and crocs. While these types of shoes are wonderful for keeping your feet cool, they are less ideal for the kind of active play that takes place in Phys. Ed. or outside at recess. Please keep in mind that our students walk, run, and jump everyday and choose their footwear for school accordingly.

Snack Shack: Our final Snack Shack of the year will take place on Friday June 7 and will be for Kindergarten & grades 3, 4, & 5. Click Here for more info.

Report Cards: Our teachers have begun work on report cards for the final term this year. You can find information HERE about how to view your child’s report card online, once it is available June 26, 2024.

Transportation: A reminder to Mahogany parents to register for bus transportation for the 2024-25 school year before June 16.

Kindergarten Orientation: We are excited to welcome our next year Kindergarten children and their families to our Welcome to Kindergarten orientation on Thursday June 6.

School Fees: As the school year is almost over, please make sure to log in and check your MyCBE account as you may have fees still outstanding. New fees are added throughout the year which include: field trips. You may also have lunch supervision fees outstanding. You can make partial payments if needed or apply for a waiver online. Please call our office (403-817-3436) or send us an email (bayside@cbe.ab.ca) if you have questions about fees.

School Council and BSFA News:

June Meeting: Our final School Council and BSFA meeting will take place on June
11 at 6:00 PM at Bayside School. All parents are welcome! Please note this is a
change in date from our usual 3rd Tuesday of the month schedule.

AGM: The AGM for Bayside School Council and Bayside School Fundraising
Association will take place in the fall on Tuesday September 17th. A few of our
executive members are stepping down from their positions so we want to
encourage parents to consider joining the team! We will have more information soon
about the positions that will be available.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Sports Day: Bayside School’s second annual Sports day will be taking place on Wednesday June 26 and we need volunteers! We will be looking for approximately 2 volunteers per class to help supervise Sports Day activities and to hand out freezies when we are done. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have a current CBE volunteer clearance and you are able to come help out on Sports Day.
