Notice Regarding Overflow Designation for Lakeshore School

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

We would like to inform you that due to continued enrolment growth at Lakeshore School, the school will be unable to accommodate all the students from the currently designated communities for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year and beyond. For this reason, enrolment at Lakeshore School will be capped, and an overflow school will be established.

Effective immediately, all new Grade 7 to Grade 9 registrations for Lakeshore School, including new registrations in SchoolEngage, will be overflowed to Nickle School:

  • Nickle School is in the community of Lake Bonavista at 2500 Lake Bonavista Dr. SE Calgary, AB T2J 2Y6. phone 403-777-7720

For the remainder of the 2023-24 school year, only new Grade 7 to 9 students will be overflowed to Nickle School. New registrations for Grade 6 students will continue to be accepted at Lakeshore School.

All Grade 7 to Grade 9 students who live in the Lakeshore School boundary area and attend the overflow school, Nickle School, will be placed on a call-back list and offered a place at Lakeshore School if space becomes available.

Effective for the 2024-25 school year, all new Grade 6 to Grade 9 registrations for Lakeshore School that are unsuccessful in the lottery or register later in the school year will be overflowed to Nickle School.

Why is this change happening?

There have been continuous registrations from the communities of Auburn Bay and Mahogany communities and there is no additional space at Lakeshore School to accommodate the growing student population. For this reason, changes must be put in place to ensure the school remains at its capacity and for the safety of students and staff.

No Changes for Current Grade 6 to 9 Students Attending Lakeshore School

Current Grade 6 to 9 students attending Lakeshore School will be able to remain at the school, provided they do not move out of their community.

How do I register for the current school year?

Any new registrations for the 2023-24 school year after the date of this notice from students living in the Lakeshore School designated boundary must still register for Lakeshore School through SchoolEngage. Once these registrations have been received, the school will determine if there is space and resources available at Lakeshore School. If the student cannot be accommodated, student information is transferred to their new overflow designation, Nickle School. The student will be added to the call-back list for Lakeshore School based on priority. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.

How do I register for school next year?

Grade 5 students living in the attendance area for Lakeshore, currently attending Auburn Bay School, Bayside School, or Mahogany School, will automatically be included in the lottery for Grade 6 at Lakeshore School. Please visit our website for more information on the CBE lottery process.

For the 2024-25 school year, registrations submitted before the lottery deadline of 12 p.m. (noon) on Feb. 13, 2024, will be included in the lottery draws. All registrations received after noon on Feb. 13, 2024, will be added to the callback list (based on the appropriate priority level) in the order they are received.

Students attending other schools or an Alternative or Language program will need to register at Lakeshore School prior to the lottery deadline.

What is a call-back list?

If space becomes available in Lakeshore School during the school year, that space will be offered to students on the call-back list who are currently attending the designated overflow school, Nickle School. Families will be notified by their school if space becomes available.

Students remain on the call-back list while they attend the designated overflow school. Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the Lakeshore school boundary or transfer from their designated overflow school. Any new registrations received for the 2023-24 school year will be added to the call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration.

The lottery process will be followed for Grade 6 to Grade 9 for the 2024-25 school year and beyond. For more details on how we determine priority, please visit our website.

We will make every effort to keep siblings together at a single school. Families with a Grade 6 student who is unsuccessful in the lottery and a sibling who is already attending Lakeshore School may choose to register all children at the overflow Nickle School.

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated or overflow school if they live beyond the walk zone. Please note that transportation fees apply to overflow situations as well. Families must visit Busing & Transportation for important information on transportation services. Families must register for transportation, if they want to use the service, using MyCBE.

In the CBE and across the city, we are experiencing a school bus driver shortage that may impact the mode of service provided. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible and working with our partners to restore reliability to transportation services.
