Happy Friday Bayside!
One tenth of the year is almost done and we are well into the business of learning and assessment. Our teachers have been administering Alberta Education literacy and numeracy screening assessments and are working on preparing IPPs to be shared with families during the second week of October. Our grade 3 team, along with Ms. McCune, are preparing for the Orange Shirt Day assemblies on Tuesday September 29. Of course, all of our teachers are also continuing with their daily planning, teaching, and supervision duties. I am so appreciative of the diligence, hard work, and passion of our amazing teaching staff.

Thank you to our School Council and BSFA for providing our teachers with a delicious dinner for Meet the Teacher evening. It is wonderful to receive appreciation, especially when our staff work an extra long day!
Terry Fox Run Update:
The Terry Fox Run on September 18 was a huge success and we were able to surpass our fundraising goal of $1500… our total collected for the Terry Fox Foundation was $1809.70. To celebrate, some of our teachers will be putting on the Granny Pants for a silly game the week of October 9. I know our students will love it! Thanks to the organizers, volunteers, students, and staff for a successful event.
Orange Shirt Day at Bayside School:
We will be observing Orange Shirt Day and celebrating the message that Every Child Matters on Tuesday, September 29th. All staff and students are invited to wear an orange shirt as we honor the message: Every Child Matters. To learn more about Orange Shirt Day, see this short video.
Grade 3 Sharing Assemblies:
On Tuesday, September 29, the grade 3 students will be hosting two assemblies to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. At these assemblies the grade 3 students will be sharing some of their learning and leading some songs. Both assemblies will be identical, and grade 3 parents* are welcome to join either. The morning assembly begins at 8:30 am, and the afternoon assembly begins at 1:30 pm. Doors will open 15 minutes before each assembly, please come to the office for entry. Please reach out to Ms. McCune or your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions.
*Due to limited gym capacity, this assembly is open to students, staff, and parents of grade 3 students. Parents of students in other grades will have an opportunity to attend a sharing assembly later in the year.
Sound Kreations is Coming Soon!
We are excited to welcome Sound Kreations to Bayside school from October 5-8 and October 20-23 for our SLAM Poetry Residency with Artist MelVeeX. It promises to be an exciting two weeks where MelVee will help us to re-frame the world of Language Arts and give the power of poetic expression a contemporary spin! Throughout the week, students will be supported in creating and performing their own piece of poetry! Thank you to Bayside School Council and BSFA for providing the funds to support this exciting and unique opportunity.
Halloween at Bayside School:
Friday October 30 will be a special learning day at Bayside School! On this day, classes may engage in Halloween or Autumn-themed learning activities at the teachers' discretion. We know that many of our families look forward to Halloween each year and we welcome the opportunity to capitalize on our students’ excitement to enhance their learning.
Please have your child bring a healthy snack for him- or her-self only. Please do not send a treat for the whole class as we will not be having class parties on that day and staff are unable to distribute treats to the class. More information about CBE nutrition policies can be found here.
We invite students and staff to wear costumes for the day, if they wish. When choosing a costume to wear to school please remember:
- Keep your child’s comfort and safety in mind for indoor and outdoor play and learning. Make sure your child can wear a coat and indoor and outdoor shoes with their costume. Consider also that your child can easily get in or out of the costume independently for visits to the bathroom or if they get too hot and want to change.
- Long capes, uncomfortable shoes, or other tripping hazards are discouraged. Students should be able to participate in gym and outdoor play safely.
- Please ensure their vision is not obscured by their costume. For this reason, masks should not be worn. If your child wishes to show their mask to their class, we can make that happen and then they will be asked to keep it in their backpack until home time.
- Please leave loose props at home. We cannot be responsible for anything lost or left behind at the school before Halloween night. Please do not send costume weapons to school (swords, guns, etc.).
- No scary or gory costumes. Please remember we have small children in the building as well as students and staff with varying levels of sensitivity. We want everyone to feel safe and have fun!
- If your family does not celebrate Halloween, or your child is reluctant to wear a costume, they are invited to wear pajamas as an alternative.

Congratulations to our two Squishies winners — both prizes have been picked up! 🎊 We also had some really great conversations at our meeting about what Council actually does and how parents can get involved.
