Bayside November 8 Update

Hello Bayside Parents!

A short update for a short week:) We had a lovely Remembrance Day assembly hosted by our grade 4 students and teachers. All of our students were very respectful and learned about the purpose and importance of Remembrance Day, some of the important symbols, and we showed appreciation for our Indigenous Veterans’ contributions given that today, Nov. 8, is Indigenous Veterans Day in Canada. At 11:00 AM, we recognized a school-wide moment of silence in classrooms before our grade 1s and 2s were dismissed for lunch time. We recorded our grade 4 and 5 performances and will be sharing these in the gathering space during the Winter Wonderland Open House on December 14. (Thank you  to Alasia P for the beautiful poppies artwork).

When we return from Fall Break, it will be a week of special celebrations at Bayside. We will be recognizing Diwali on November 14 by learning a little bit about this joyous holiday that is celebrated by many of our families. Next week is also Metis week! Bayside students in all grades will take some time to learn about and celebrate Metis culture. On November 16, we are excited to welcome some special guests from the Metis community, Lindsay Tabin (one of our wonderful parents) and Nelson Lussier (who has recently been elected as Citizen’s Representative for District 5). Lindsay and Nelson will be meeting with our grade 3-5 classes to share about Metis history and culture. Thank you to Ms. Mask for coordinating and leading our learning during Metis week.

Reminders and Updates:

Library Visits and Overdue Books - Students are well into schedules and regular library visits.  However, this schedule will change slightly following the Fall Break.  Starting Nov 20 (and continuing through to Winter Break), classes will visit as follows:

Mondays – Gartner, Corriveau, Mask, MacLellan and McNabb

Tuesdays – Barrow, morning Kindergarten, MacKenzie and Dennis

Wednesdays – Gannon, Fernandez and Walker

Thursdays – Buist, Milburn and afternoon Kindergarten

Fridays – Dec 1 and Dec 15 – ALL Grade 4 and 5 students

We are encouraging students to return their books on a regular basis.  Kindergarten and Gr 1 students are able to sign-out one book a week, while the other grades can sign-out two books a week.  It is the expectation that students will adhere to the book limits as set.  This helps to keep as many books on the shelves and available for circulation for all students.  Please support your child(ren) in getting their books back to the library in time for their library visit.

Scholastic Book Fair – Students will visit the Book Fair during the week of Nov 20, with actual sales taking place during conferences on Nov 23-24.  Students will bring home a flyer outlining some of the books that will be available.  We also remind students that any purchases are a family decision.

Please do not send money to school with your child. There will be no shopping during the school day. All purchases will be made with parents present during Parent Teacher interviews.

During the Fair, there will be a display outlining wish lists of books for the individual classrooms.  If parents want, they can purchase a book from the list, and donate it to their child’s classroom.

As Bayside Fundraising Association (BFA) is running this Book Fair completely, BFA will earn 25% in cash from ALL purchases made during the Fair.
