Happy Friday Bayside!
We had an excellent first week of swimming lessons for our grade 1 and grade 3 classes. Our volunteer helpers were outstanding and we so appreciate their help with all of the classes. We are looking forward to next week when Ms. Barrow’s class and our Grade 2 students will have an opportunity to swim at the Seton YMCA. Please see below for information about a change to the schedule for next week.
It is important to recognize the role of volunteers in making special opportunities like this possible for Bayside students. In addition to the wonderful parents who have been helping our students at the pool, the bus transportation for lessons was funded by Bayside School Fundraising Association (BSFA), reducing the overall cost for families. BSFA is a small, but mighty group of parents and volunteers who organize fundraisers for Bayside school to be able to provide enhancements to our school programs on behalf of all students. For parents who may not be able to volunteer during the school day, joining our School Council and BSFA is another way to be involved and to support your child’s school experience. They meet once a month in the evening, on the second Tuesday of the month. In addition to supporting the school community and staying up to date on what is happening at Bayside, School Council and BSFA are a great opportunity to meet and get to know other parents. Our School Council and BSFA parents are some of the most generous, kind, and all around amazing people I know!
Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on May 13 and we are looking for new members of the executive! Please consider joining us.
Updates and Reminders:
Changes to Next Week Swimming Schedule: There will be a change to our swimming schedule next week. This change impacts the following classes:
Grade 1: Ms. Barrow
Grade 2: Ms. McNabb, Ms. van Runt, Ms. Robinson, Ms. Fernandez, Ms. MacKenzie
The YMCA Rentals department made an error and is not able to accommodate our school for swimming lessons on Friday May 9 so swimming lessons will be cancelled on that day only. We are in the process of adjusting the fee to reflect one less day of lessons and parents will receive a refund for the difference. Classes will still have their planned swimming lessons on Monday May 5-Thursday May 8. Friday May 9 will be a regular instructional day for all students 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Check out last week’s update for reminders and tips to make swimming week a success!
Bikes and Scooters on School Property: It is awesome to see so many of our students riding their bikes and scooters to school with the warmer weather. Some safety reminders for everyone:
- Please ensure your child wears a helmet
- We ask that everyone (adults and children) get off their bike or scooter and walk it when on school property and when crossing the street. This makes it safer for everyone, particularly during our busy pick-up and drop-off times.
- Please send your child with a lock that they are able to use independently. It is the family’s responsibility to keep your child’s items secure.
For more safety tips, check out City of Calgary Cycling bylaws and Safety Tips.
My First Ride: A reminder to families to sign up for My First Ride if your child will be new to riding the bus and you are interested. Information is available here!
Snack Shack: New dates have been added for the Grade 5 Snack Shack!
May 8 – AM Kindergarten
May 9 - PM Kindergarten, Grades 3-5 * Please email Mr. Corriveau if you are able to volunteer on May 9. (jacorriveau@cbe.ab.ca)
May 30 - Grades 1-2
Hats on for Mental Health: On May 7, Bayside community is invited to wear your favourite hat to help raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. It is an opportunity for families to talk about ways that you already support good mental health in your home and how you can continue to do so. Some ideas:
- Encouraging helpful and realistic routines and predictability
- Being active, spending time together outdoors
- Create consistent time and space to talk as a family
- In difficult situations, helping children learn to manage their feelings in positive ways and to problem solve (deep breathing, calming exercises, working together to resolve a conflict etc.)
School Council and BSFA Updates:
