Bayside January 12 Update

Happy New Year Bayside!

We have some cozy days this week at Bayside. With the extreme cold temperatures, students and staff stayed indoors throughout the days (except for Mr. Chang who was outside clearing snow!). We call days that are colder than -20 Degrees Celsius “blue days” and students are kept indoors for safety reasons. It is still important for students to come to school prepared for cold temperatures and we appreciate the efforts our families are making to keep your children warm and safe. We expect a little bit of a warm-up next week with highs of -16 to -4. Even if the temperature is below -20 in the morning, please ensure your child comes to school prepared for outdoor play as we will be checking temperatures throughout the day and students may go outside in the afternoon. If your family does not have adequate winter clothing, please reach out to your child’s teacher or to the office (bayside@cbe.ab.ca) and we will help you out.

Reminders and Updates:

Attendance: The Calgary Board of Education recognizes the strong positive correlation between attendance and a student’s success in school. Regular attendance sets students on the path to reaching their full potential. At CBE we use a whole school approach to attendance to strategically allocate our resources and create a positive culture where students feel a sense of belonging.

It is the responsibility of the administrative team (See AR 6020) to review student attendance regularly and to contact parents to not only inform them of irregular attendance, but also to offer follow-up and support to help families to improve attendance. Next week, Mrs. Harder is emailing families of students who have missed greater than 20% of school days. In some cases, student and family illnesses might be impacting your child’s attendance and so, in these cases, there is nothing to be done and attendance improves when the child is well. For some families, other factors may be impacting you or your child and we would like to invite you to reach out to us so we can help.

A reminder to all parents to please email the school (bayside@cbe.ab.ca) or call the attendance line (403-817-3436) to let us know when your child will be absent.

Barewire Recycling: The grade 2 copper wire and metal recycling drive was a huge success!  Congratulations to Ms. McNabb's class for collecting 303 pounds of metal and winning the pizza party!  In total our school collected 1138 pounds of metal. Barewire Recycling gave the grade 2s $508.40 for this metal which will be used to purchase materials for their conservation project - Yellow Fish Road.  Thank you to everyone that participated and supported the grade 2s in their conservation project.  They will also be presenting their conservation project at the Calgary Zoo in May.

Library Visits and Overdue Books: as students return from Winter Break, we are back into routine visits to the library.  The schedule will change slightly next week to accommodate the non-instruction day on January 15.  The schedule outlined below will remain in effect until the week of February 19:

Mondays – Barrow, morning Kindergarten, MacKenzie and Dennis Tuesdays – Gartner, Corriveau, Mask, MacLellan and McNabb Wednesdays – Gannon, Milburn and afternoon Kindergarten Thursdays – Buist, Fernandez and Walker Fridays – Jan 19 and Feb 2 – ALL Grade 4 and 5 students

We are encouraging students to return their books on a regular basis.  Kindergarten and Gr 1 students are able to sign-out one book a week, while the other grades can sign-out two books at a time.  It is the expectation that students will adhere to the book limits as set.  This helps to keep as many books on the shelves and available for circulation for all students.  Please support your child(ren) in getting their books back to the library in time for their library visit. Also, in late February, any books still overdue from September and October are assumed lost and replacement charges will be added to a student’s on-line account.

Registration for 2024-25 School Year: Starting Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, kindergarten registration will be open for the 2024-25 school year. For children to be eligible to register and attend kindergarten next school year, they must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2024.

See the CBE message “Getting Ready for Kindergarten Registration”  and the “Kindergarten Registration Guide” for more information.

Students who are currently enrolled at Bayside in K-4, and who live within our designated attendance boundary, will automatically be enrolled in the next grade at Bayside for the 2024-25 school year. There is no need to register your child again.

Grade 5 students living in the attendance area for Lakeshore, currently attending Bayside School, will automatically be included in the lottery for Grade 6 at Lakeshore School. Please visit our website for more information on the CBE lottery process. The notice regarding overflow designation for Lakeshore school can be found here.

For the 2024-25 school year, registrations submitted before the lottery deadline of 12 p.m. (noon) on Feb. 13, 2024, will be included in the lottery draws. All registrations received after noon on Feb. 13, 2024, will be added to the callback list (based on the appropriate priority level) in the order they are received.

***All parents are reminded to keep your contact information up to date through SchoolEngage by logging into My CBE Account. Also important, please ensure you have indicated your child’s siblings in SchoolEngage; this is especially important during the lottery process at both Mahogany School and Lakeshore School to help us ensure families are kept together as much as possible.

Report Cards: Teachers are busy working on report cards this month and report cards will be available online for viewing beginning January 30. If your child has an IPP, you can expect the IPP to be shared with you on January 30th as well. Click Here for more information about accessing online report cards through MyCBE.
