Happy Friday Bayside families,

We had a beautiful Pink Shirt Day assembly on Wednesday, thanks to our grade 1 team. It was lovely to look out on the sea of pink shirts in both the audience and on our grade 1 performers and to hear the “Kindness Grows” songs and messages. The assembly was a very special way to end the month of February which has been filled with acts of kindness by students in all grades. Even Topp Kids got into the act and delivered notes of kindness all over the school one evening!

Pink Shirt Day is about building a community of kindness and a sense of belonging. It can start with you, one word of kindness, an acknowledgement, a smile...each action we take has the potential to ripple well beyond ourselves. We often talk about ‘anti-bullying’ but I believe it is most helpful to talk about the alternatives to bullying such as kindness, respect for all, inclusion, understanding, and helping others, to name a few. When someone acts as a ‘bully’ they are seeking to take away someone else’s power, often because they themselves feel powerless. When we take the time to look for kindness and to spread kindness, we have the opportunity to help someone feel their power, to open possibilities and to create resilience and caring. This is why Pink Shirt Day has such a powerful message… it reminds us that the best way to stand up for others is not with more anger, aggression, or meanness, but with kindness.
