Happy Thursday Bayside,

Tomorrow is a CBE system professional learning day. While our students are enjoying a long weekend, our teachers will be participating in learning at schools across Calgary. Engaging in career-long learning is an important part of a teacher’s professional role and we are fortunate to have access to many learning opportunities in the Calgary Board of Education. Bayside teachers will be learning about a wide variety of topics including the use of AI tools to improve student learning, supporting social-emotional learning and student mental health, explicit vocabulary instruction, using digital tools such as Read&Write and OrbitNote to engage every student, supporting gifted learners in inclusive classrooms, music and art instructional practices, and much more. We look forward to coming back together and sharing our new learning with our students and each other!

UPDATES AND REMINDERS:

Lakeshore Lottery Update: What you need to know… (the following information will also be sent in an email to grade 5 parents on Friday Jan. 30)

  • Grade 5 students at Auburn Bay, Bayside, and Mahogany Schools are automatically enrolled in the lottery for Grade 6 at Lakeshore School. There is no action required on your end
  • Lakeshore follows the CBE Lottery Process
  • The map outlining the Lakeshore Lottery Zone is HERE
  • The lottery will be held on Wednesday, February 11th with communication of acceptance or non-acceptance happening shortly thereafter via email to all families
  • Students not accepted will be automatically designated to our overflow school, Nickle School
  • Students not accepted will remain on the Lakeshore callback list in lottery priority order, provided they are attending at Nickle School
  • If your child is NOT planning on attending Lakeshore next year, please email lakeshore@cbe.ab.ca to inform our team
  • Both Lakeshore and Nickle will lead students and families through a transition, including school visits to our feeder schools and open house opportunities

Your Voice Matters: Parents of students in grade 4 at Bayside school will be receiving an invitation in your email on January 30 to participate in the annual Alberta Education and Childcare Assurance survey. The information gathered from the survey helps to shape our priorities in the School Development Plan. Grade 4 students and teachers will also participate in the survey. More information about the AECA survey can be found here: https://bayside.cbe.ab.ca/news/your-voice-matters-share-your-thoughts-on-alberta-schools

Bayside Valentines: Since February 14 is a non-instructional day, Families
are welcome to send valentines to school on Wednesday February 11 but are not
required to do so. Our classes will be emphasizing kindness and friendship and
the focus will be on student learning and belonging. The specific activities
will be at the teacher’s discretion.

Some general guidelines to ensure our students have a positive experience:

  • If you choose to send Valentines to school, please send enough cards for each child in the class. Teachers will let you know how many students to plan for.
  • Please consider addressing Valentines “To my friend”, rather than specific names. This allows for much more efficient and manageable handing out of the cards, especially for our younger students. Teachers will not send class lists home.
  • As on a regular day, please send a healthy snack for your child. We will not be having class parties with shared treats.
  • If you would like to include a small treat in your Valentines, please consider sending a non-food treat such as fun erasers, pencils, stickers, etc. Candy treats will be sent home with students at the end of the day to be eaten at home.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
