Happy Friday Bayside!

This week our staff talked about Bayside’s Outdoor Learning Circle that has been taking shape over the last two years. The space was built by the CBE Landscaping team using funds intended to support Indigenous Learning in our School. We consulted with Elders Casey Eagle Speaker and Hal Eagle Tail around the design and purpose of the space and our students and families have given us their ideas and feedback as well. At this time, the hardscaping has been completed with the boulders forming the circle. We have had trees planted around the perimeter through a grant from Tree Canada and our stepping stones have been installed in the circle. Each stepping stone represents people in our school community and how they feel connected to the land. In the spring, our students, staff, and volunteers will get our hands dirty and will continue the work with smaller plantings around the perimeter of the circle.

Beginning next week, we will be focusing on establishing norms with our students around the use of the circle to ensure we are good stewards of the land and caring for this special place. Teachers will be leading the learning in their classrooms and all staff will support students with learning to use the space appropriately. Our norms are:

This is a Learning Space:

-          Enter Calmly

-          Be responsible

-          Respect Everyone

-          Respect the Land

-          Listen with all your senses

-          End with gratitude
