April 12 Parent Message
Happy Friday Bayside!
Spring is here and with warmer temperatures, it was lovely to see classes taking time outdoors, both for play and for learning (and often both at once). I always love this time of year and the changes that happen in the spring… longer days, warmer temperatures, and watching the world transform in front of our eyes as the grass turns green and the trees sprout leaves. Earth Day (April 22) will be an opportunity for us to reflect on our stewardship of the natural world and the land around us. Teachers will be planning to engage students in land-based learning and thinking about the actions they can take to care for our earth. We will also be inviting families to Walk or Wheel to school to help reduce vehicular traffic.
Traffic and Pedestrian Safety: We were pleased to have Calgary Police and Calgary Parking at Bayside School this week, monitoring the traffic around our school. They noted that overall, drivers were generally safe and courteous and our pedestrians were also making great choices. The most significant concern they noted was the number of U-turns and that many drivers were making U-turns where they are not permitted.
U-turns are not allowed at the entrance to private property, like at the entrance to the parking lot for Bayside school along Auburn Crest Park. They are also not allowed where signage prohibits u-turns, on a roadway between intersections, or at an alley intersection.
We recognize that it is difficult to access the drop-off zone in front of Bayside school without making a u-turn if you enter Auburn Crest Park from Auburn Crest Drive. Here is a map of alternative routes you might take in order to access the drop-off zone without making a u-turn:
Planning for next year: Are You Moving? If you are moving prior to the next school year, we would appreciate knowing as soon as possible. This information is critical in helping us organize class lists for next year and ensuring we are prepared to welcome students in the fall with the appropriate staff and resources. If you do plan to move to a new community or change schools next year, please email bayside@cbe.ab.ca with your child’s name, grade, and your new community/ school/ area. This information will also allow us to support you and your child with transitioning to a new school if that is the case.
Families who live in Mahogany and who have accepted a call-back for the 2024-25 school year do not need to notify us as this information has already been shared with us.
Kindergarten Enrollment Update: Our wonderful office staff have finished processing the existing registrations for 2024-25 Kindergarten. At this time, we are planning for two morning (AM) and two afternoon (PM) Kindergarten classes. There have been more requests for morning than afternoon and so we will be conducting a draw to determine AM & PM placement. Families who requested PM kindergarten will automatically be placed in PM. Families who do not receive their preferred placement in AM will be added to a wait list and will be offered spots as they become available, in the order of the draw. We will be notifying families of your child’s placement via email by the end of day Friday April 19.
We anticipate that we will continue to receive Kindergarten registrations over the coming months and will be monitoring student enrolment and making adjustments as we are able.
School Spirit: Wear red, black, or white on Thursday April 18 to celebrate the Calgary Flames last official game of the season. We are looking forward to seeing everyone show their school/ team spirit!
School Council & BSFA News:
The Bayside School Fundraising Association runs fundraisers from time to time to raise money for our School. We are a non-profit association that works to improve the school community through classroom enhancements, art projects, school equipment, physical education equipment, theatre, field trips, et cetera.
Please help support US so that we can support YOUR children!
BAYSIDE SCHOOL’S FIRST DANCE!
On Thursday April 18th, 2024, Bayside Council presents our first ever Spring Fling Dance at Bayside school, where our gymnasium will be transformed into a whimsical spring wonderland! Bring your family and join us for fun music, laughter and crazy dance moves!
There are two dances: one at 5:30pm-6:45pm and the next at 7:00pm-8:15pm.
We are recommending that Grades Kindergarten to Grade 2 attend the first dance and Grade 3-5 attend the second Dance. Of course, anyone is welcome to attend whatever dance is most convenient for their family.
***PLEASE NOTE: This is a parent/guardian supervised event, no children will be left unattended.
